Sabine Singh brings international flair to Greenlee
Sabine Singh's right arm, like a lovely, unyielding piece of iron rebar, makes a quick, restraining motion towards my sternum and shepherds me back up onto the curb before an oncoming yellow cab can mow me down.
“See the maternal instinct? I have none, but playing Greenlee is bringing it out, “ she says apologetically as we cross into New
York's Lincoln Center on an unseasonably warm afternoon. A moment later, she's discussing the all-night beauty shops
she's had to patronize since becoming part of a soap that often shoots late into the evening. But a side story about a troublesome pedicure when the New York native sees fellow ABC daytimer BethAnn Bonner (Talia, One Life to Live) leaving a nearby café. The two embrace, then Singh coos over
Bonner's Chihuahua, Lulu, who's riding shotgun in a camouflage backpack. After some garden-variety catching up, the two women part with more hugs and kisses and see-yous.
Old pals? “It's the funniest thing,” Singh says once we're walking away. “I just met her at an event last week.”
Welcome to Singh's world, where the silly, serious, and sublime are woven so tightly that sometimes
it's hard to tell them apart. But she says that the experiences that made her who she is are the same ones that make her a good steward for
Greenlee's damaged heart.
Serenity Now
Last year, Singh made a concerted effort to chill out and let the universe present her with her next challenge. Months later she was crashing cars and doing penance in Pine Valley – all while trying to reconcile why Greenlee
couldn't grasp the truth of her situation.
“Greenlee's relationships, except maybe with her father and Kendall – except now
it's a broken relationship – they're primarily unhealthy,” says the Suffern, NY, native,
who's quite close with her parents and sister Schandra. Many times, she recalls as we sit at an outdoor restaurant, her character was told that
“'Ryan doesn't love me' or ‘Ryan has a new wife,' and then the next episode
it's like I never heard that before,” she says. “To be able to justify that…” Momentarily at a loss for words, she grins. “My own inner secret is that
she's mentally insane. It just never comes out.”
Good thing there's a British P.I. in town who happens to like his women angst-filled and zany. Aidan was “the only person who said ‘In all your ugliness, I still see
beauty,'” she says reflectively, then seems to come back to herself. “And he's just so damn hot.
He's so hot! I sometimes just look at him and, I don't know, I can't believe I'm paid to have to kiss him.”
As Jack's wayward daughter tries to navigate her new life, Singh is gradually setting into hers. The product of a Pakistani dad and an Austrian mom, the actress says she was raised with both Eastern mysticism and Western practicality – “And
they're constantly fighting,” she jokes. An upbringing stepped in travel and exposure to all different kinds of people, she adds, continues to pay rich dividends.
“That's my toolbox, you know? That's where, when I have a role, whether it's Greenlee and her 27 different personalities or whether
it's a role that's completely different than me that's in an actual play, my toolbox is so large.
It's like, ‘Wow. Here's this person and what they're going through. Okay, I've met someone like that. I understand this situation.”
Relax, Relate, Release
The more time Singh spends in Greenlee's stilettos, the more she and her alter ego are in synch. “She is turning around now,” the blonde says, relieved as she relates a scene that
she's going to tape after lunch. “I was working on it this morning. I was like, ‘This is genuinely one of the first times where
I'm agreeing with her, where Sabine is agreeing with what she says!'”
Similarly, the longer she plays flighty Ms Smythe, the more Singh is grateful that her path carried her to daytime. “I am living a blessed life, because after making the concrete decision that I would pursue acting and spending a lot of time in Los Angeles, and even in London, I knew pretty quickly that New York was where I wanted to go and make my life,” she says, the sun glinting off the Om Shanti – “peace” – necklace hanging at the hollow of her throat. “So the fact that I am currently doing that is 100 percent, check-it-off-the-list dream done.”
FYIFYI FYIFYI
Birthday: August 4
Looks Good For Her Brain Age: In an effort to maintain mental agility, Singh recently bought a Nintendo DS and regularly plays Brain Age on it. “My brain age is currently 64!” she laughs.
“I'm hoping, by December, to get it into the 40s.”
A Talent for Trekking: In the past year or so Singh has traveled to South Africa and Greece – both on her own – and has plans to visit Pakistan with her family in December.
Grad Girl: Singh graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and also studied drama with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England.
CAPTIONS:
ON HER SCREEN TEST WITH ALICIA MINSHEW (KENDALL) AND CAMERON MATHISON (RYAN): “I felt like everyone was working together. I felt an automatic trust.”
ON HER PREDECESSOR: “I don't know about the Ryan/Greenlee relationship when it was Rebecca [Budig]. I
haven't seen any other episodes. I was sort of told not to go look at them.”
ON MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: “I was sad about that. I really liked the Josh/Greenlee pairing. I think also because I have a crush on him in real life.”
ON BOYFRIEND EVAN: “He has to be one of the most open-minded, easygoing, relaxed people.”
